Zir-e Derakhtan-e zeytun

Abbas Kiarostami
1994 Iran 103 minutes Persian

The filmmaker, Kershavaz, chose two non-professionals to play the parts of two newly-weds (as well as a scene from And Life Goes on). The young man who was selected can do nothing but stutter when he has to sepak to a woman, so Hosein, the crew’s jack-of-all-trades, is called on to replace him. Tahereh, the young woman, at first protests as Hosein has aleady been making unwelcome advances to her for some time, but finally agrees because of her love for cinema. Hosein takes advantage of this out-of-the-ordinary situation – finding himself in the role of the husband to the woman he desires in real life – to pursue his courtship and finally manages to obtain Tahereh’s consent.
