Zuoz

Daniella Marxer
2006 France; Austria 71 minutes English; German

In the heart of the Swiss Alps, the private school of Zuoz teaches the kids of wealthy families from all over the world the virtues of liberalism, discipline and civility. The boarding school’s regimented life is severe, like the high snowladen mountains surrounding it: no broken rules, no excessive behaviour, moderation in everything. Otherwise, punishment strikes. The supervisors have an eye everywhere and nothing escapes them in the long dark corridors where the pupils’ rooms must remain unlocked and visits from the opposite sex go no further than the threshold. They are also taught, with all the subtleties of puritan hypocrisy ,about the existence of poverty in the world, another universe the mere mention of which is enough to tighten the ranks.
