Cinéaste, critique et acteur (il a d’ailleurs joué en 1984 dans Qu’est-ce que j’ai fait pour mériter ça de Pedro Almodovar), il se fait remarquer par son premier long métrage Los Viajes escolares (1974), portrait de famille personnel qui déclenche la polémique, et continue avec des films singuliers qui portent un regard critique sur les comportements individuels : L’Homme aux chiens (Dedicatoria, 1980), A un dieu inconnu (A un dios desconocido, 1977), Las Bicicletas son para el verano (1984).
