Some sources springing up from the mountains in Papua New Guinea contain some plant salt. In the same way as weeds cling to stones, salt settles on everything lying in water. The Baruya tribe of Marawaka know how to make salt. “My father used to make salt. He taught me his technique. Salt is not an ordinary good for us: it is our currency, our only means of buying what we need from other tribes.”
