The emancipation of Muslim women in Central Asia. The khujum (offensive against the old customs), a movement for women’s liberation and equal rights with men, was launched in Uzbekistan in 1927. Gathered in the squares, the women threw off their paranja (veil), which was the symbol of their slavery. As a reprisal, 300 of them were killed by their fathers, brothers or husbands.
