L’ Attentat

Simone Bitton
1998 Israel; France; Belgium 52 minutes Arabic; Hebrew

On September 4, 1997, three youngs Palestinians blew themselves up on a pedestrian street in Jerusalem, killing five Israeli civilians, three of them teenage girls. One of the girls was the granddaughter of a famous Israeli pacifist. A month later, eighteen people were killed in another suicide bombing. An intelorable reality of Palestinian desperation, these suicide bombings are also a symptom and metaphor for the dead end into which the Middle East peace process has strayed. This film deals with the overlapping destinies of these young Israelis and Palestinians, whose blood mingled on the sidewalks of horror. Their families appear in the film, transgressing the rules of the conflict to understand one another’s grief, join their voices and faces on screen, meet one another to give vent to an irresistible desire for peace.
