Las Katynski

Marcel Lozinski
1990 France; Poland 55 minutes Polish

“In spring 1940, 15 000 Polish officers were executed by the NKVD. 4 500 of them are buried in Katyn. 50 years of silence, fear and lies. This is not a historical film. It takes place today. We discover the faces of the people concerned, their reactions and feelings. Who are they ? We see the wives and children of the victims in the train bound for Katyn. Former prisoners, who survived the massacre are also on that train. Victims or artisans of the lies surrounding the Katyn affair, the role of political personalities, invoking reasons of state. The forest is a symbol of horror too for the Russians who live near Katyn – their near and dear ones, victims of Stalinist repression, were thrown into mass graves there. What is important is not merely what people say or how they express themselves, but also what they don’t say or when they choose to lie. And then, there is this former high-ranking NKVD official who claims he only carried out orders…” (Marcel Lozinski)
