Malaak et le vaste monde

Malaak is a young girl brimming with life, humour and poetry. She can hear the wind when all the filmmaker hears is children’s laughter in the street. Her big project is to leave for Canada. She also has a less ambitious plan, not necessarily easier to fulfil, of no longer wearing the veil, taking it off in stages. Malaak is Yemeni and works for international organisations, but she is also trapped by her family’s beliefs. At first sight, the film is a portrait of a young woman who is attracted by the modern world but prisoner of family traditions, who dreams of distant lands but is shut up in her room. On a closer look, another story emerges, a story of the link between Malaak and the filmmaker, of a bridge, a pact. (Yann Lardeau)
