Sylvie

Martine Thoquenne
1996 United Kingdom; France 78 minutes French

“Sylvie is thirty years old and lives in Cambrai. Her view of life is totally alien to ours for she is mentally handicapped. Sylvie is my sister. It is HER that I see, rather than her handicap. The film’s viewpoint ignores her limits to give free reign to her personality – her thoughts, fears, passions, her everyday life. It is a work full of emotion, which was only possible because Sylvie is my sister and I am a filmmaker. I grew up with her and am part of the world she has created for herself. The film thus has two voices – it lovingly and poetically reveals Sylvie’s world and shows how this world has influenced my perception of life.” (Martine Thoquenne)
